ROYAL CENTER, Ind. – Brad Swartzell, a longtime member of the Pioneer Regional School Corporation Board of School Trustees, has been selected as recipient of the 2026 Indiana School Boards Association (ISBA) Region 4 Outstanding Board Service Award, recognizing his exceptional commitment to public education, servant leadership, and community service. The regional Outstanding Board Service Award honors school board members from across Indiana each year who have demonstrated above-and-beyond service to their school corporation and community. The regional award winners are recognized at the annual ISBA/IAPSS Fall Conference at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. For more than 20 years, Swartzell has served the students, staff, and families of Pioneer Regional School Corporation with distinction. Having recently completed his fifth term as a board member and currently seeking a sixth term, he is the district's longest-serving board member and has provided steady leadership through periods of growth, change, and long-range planning. "Brad leads by example," said Dr. Charles Grable, superintendent of the Pioneer Regional School Corporation. "He understands that effective governance is built on trust, respect, and a shared commitment to student success. His influence has helped shape Pioneer Regional Schools into the strong district it is today, and this recognition is richly deserved." Throughout his tenure, Swartzell has played an important role in many significant initiatives. His leadership contributed to Pioneer's first strategic plan, long-range facility planning efforts, bond-funded improvement projects, the hiring of key administrators, and the mentoring of new school board members. One of his greatest strengths is understanding that successful organizations are built by empowering capable people. Colleagues describe him as a leader who advocates for hiring highly qualified individuals, setting strategic goals, and allowing district staff the autonomy to utilize their expertise while remaining accountable for results. A lifelong supporter of Pioneer Regional Schools, Swartzell is a Pioneer graduate whose children also attended district schools. Known for his approachable leadership style, he is recognized for maintaining positive relationships throughout the area and remaining readily available to parents, staff members, employers, and taxpayers. ISBA’s Region 4 includes Newton, Jasper, Benton, White, Cass, Carroll, Warren, Fountain, Tippecanoe, Montgomery, Clinton, and Boone counties.
